Food, events, outdoors and relaxation in the Ottawa region
When you need an easy, fun and inspiring getaway, Ottawa is a short, direct and daily flight away from Fredericton with Porter Airlines! Summer and fall are particularly full of events and fresh local food, plus plenty of outdoor activities, cultural icons and ways to relax. Whether you’re traveling as a couple, with family or solo, here’s some trip planning inspiration for a memorable trip to Ottawa.
Festivals and events galore
No matter when you visit, you’ll find events that celebrate music, international cultures, outdoor activities, food, drink and entertainment. Browse Ottawa Tourism’s online event calendar to choose from magical fireworks and hot air balloons, craft beer, poutine, theatre, concerts, pro sports, and more!
Pedal or paddle
Two of the best ways to explore the region’s urban and rural areas is by land or water. With more than 800 kilometres of bike paths ranging from flat, paved paths to challenging hills, Ottawa is a true cycling destination for all levels. Meanwhile, the region’s waterways offer both flatwater paddling and whitewater action: go for a leisurely canoe, kayak or standup paddleboard outing within the city, or brave some of the world’s best whitewater rafting or kayaking just over one hour west of downtown!
Fresh local flavours
Did you know that Ottawa boasts over 1000 farms—more than Montreal, Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver combined? The bounty of local products inspires chefs who make Ottawa’s culinary scene a year-round draw. Taste it for yourself at neighbourhood restaurants that specialize in local, international, vegetarian and other types of cuisines. You can also take food tours, visit farmers’ markets, and attend culinary events.
Museums and beyond
Ottawa’s rich cultural scene is always full of new and fascinating discoveries. Explore the region’s national treasures, including seven national museums and the National Arts Centre; see what special exhibits are scheduled, including this summer’s immersive exhibits on Van Gogh, Monet and Banksy; and when you think you’ve seen it all, explore some of Ottawa’s Unofficial Museums which complete Ottawa’s cultural identity.
Sit back and relax
Unwinding in Ottawa is easy. Experience the benefits of thermal therapy at indoor/outdoor spas such as Nordik Spa-Nature (the largest of its kind in North America) or the more intimate Kōena Spa. Or get pampered at more traditional indoor oases such as Holtz Spa, Au Naturel Spa and Renu Spa. To passively see the sights, take a boat cruise or yacht tour on the Rideau Canal or Ottawa River, or join a bus tour. Other relaxing options include birdwatching, sandy beaches, golfing and more.
