Runway 09-27 Rehabilitation Project

Location and purpose

The Fredericton International Airport (YFC) is located in Lincoln, NB and provides services to domestic/international carriers and other private operators utilizing Runway 09-27 and Runway 15-33. Runway 09-27 is the primary runway and is essential to the safe and efficient operation of the Airport.

After decades of service, increasing flight frequency and the demands of larger, heavier aircraft, the pavement infrastructure of Runway 09-27 has come to the end of its serviceable lifecycle. This rehabilitation project will restore the runway to meet current Transport Canada standards and ensure the continued safe and reliable operation of the Airport.

The Project

  • The project is primarily a resurfacing of the Runway 09-27 pavement. This involves milling off a layer of the existing pavement and replacing it with new asphalt.
  • The airfield lighting and navigation aids are being upgraded to LED.
  • Construction of Runway End Safety Areas (RESA) will take place at the ends of the runway thresholds. This is the strengthening of the existing surface to be able to support an aircraft if it lands a bit long, or short. This does not change the length of the runways.

Timeline

  • The work has commenced mid-May and is proposed to be completed by fall 2026.
  • During construction, aircraft operations will be operating on the secondary Runway 15-33.
