YFC launches Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, an inclusive accessibility initiative
The Fredericton International Airport (YFC) is proud to announce it has adopted the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program, a program that aims to support passengers with invisible or hidden disabilities. Wearing a Sunflower lanyard is a discreet way to indicate to airport staff that someone may need extra support, assistance or time when travelling through the airport.
“We are excited to be joining the global Sunflower network as one part of our ongoing efforts to ensure a barrier-free, inclusive environment,” says Fredericton International Airport Authority (FIAA) President and CEO, Johanne Gallant. “Everyone is welcome at our airport.”
Invisible disabilities are ones that may not be obvious to others, such as autism, chronic pain, epilepsy, low vision, hearing loss, dementia, anxiety disorders, brain injuries, and many more.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program is a voluntary program, and travellers who would like to discreetly inform airport staff that they may need some extra support through their travel journey may pick up a Sunflower lanyard from the Commissionaires Office, located in the YFC terminal between arrivals and departures, on the day of travel. The lanyard helps airport workers know that a traveller may need some extra time or assistance, but it does not allow passengers to bypass screening or receive expedited check-in service.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Program is just one part of the airport’s efforts to provide an inclusive and welcoming airport.
“We are continuously working alongside our community partners to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges many people with disabilities face—and the opportunities for us to help,” says FIAA Manager of Public Relations and Marketing, Kate O’Rourke.
