Supporting those who serve
Each November, we pause to remember those who have served our country and acknowledge their courage and sacrifices. Here at the Fredericton International Airport (YFC), we’re also proud to play an active role in supporting the Canadian Armed Forces year-round.
The military connection runs deep in our community, with the ‘The Home of the Army’, the 5th Canadian Division Support Base (5 CDSB) Gagetown just 10 minutes from the airport. Military families and former military members live throughout our region—many of them are employed right here at YFC!
“My history with the airport began over 20 years ago when I was serving as the Base Commander,” says Fredericton International Airport Authority (FIAA) Board Chair, Richard Isabelle. “It’s been easy for me to be a part of the YFC community even after taking my uniform off. From the military’s perspective, there’s a crucial need for the Fredericton airport; I’ve been fortunate to be a part of cultivating and creating that positive symbiotic relationship.”
Base Gagetown isn’t just YFC’s neighbour; it’s also the second largest Canadian military base. It provides critical training to ensure Canada’s military is ready to respond when needed.
“For over 60 years, Base Gagetown has developed a deep bond with surrounding communities, where our members and their families reside,” said Colonel Paul Williams, CD, Commander 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown. “This is a region composed of energetic, generous, active, and welcoming people. The quality of life and safe environment empowers our members to raise thriving families. New Brunswick and its people demonstrate strong support for the Canadian Armed Forces, and our role in protecting national security.”
The Base is home to approximately 6,500 military members, and 1,000 public service civilians. It’s the second largest public sector employer and the third largest employer in New Brunswick. Around 10,000 Canadian Armed Forces and Department of National Defence members fly in and out of 5 CDSB Gagetown every year for critical training and various assignments.
Former Base Commander of 5 CDSB Gagetown, Col. Parsons, talks about the close connection between the military and YFC.
“The Fredericton International Airport is proud to support our military partners,” said Fredericton International Airport Authority CEO, President, and past Honorary Colonel for the 403 Squadron, Johanne Gallant. “We are a gateway for troop deployments, welcome military families during the posting season, and employ former military members – the connections between the Canadian Armed Forces and YFC are strong.”
In addition to our close working relationship with the leadership at Base Gagetown, the airport supports our military community year-round through the Art Easel Program, an initiative of Support Our Troops, the official charitable cause of the Canadian Armed Forces. We also participate in the Royal Canadian Legion’s National Poppy Campaign. The Legion is Canada’s largest Veteran support and community service organization.
“Thank you to Canadian Armed Forces members past and present for your service,” says Johanne. “We recognize the sacrifices you–and your families–make to serve our country.”
