Wheelchair rugby lands in Fredericton

Sport brings people together—and recently, at Fredericton International Airport (YFC), our welcome booth was busy welcoming athletes and supporters arriving for the inaugural Maddog Memorial Wheelchair Rugby Tournament. This event is held in honour of the late Hal Merrill, a Fredericton native and a three-time Paralympian.
Merrill represented Canada at three Paralympic Games—Barcelona in 1992, Atlanta in 1996, and Sydney in 2000—earning three bronze medals during his career. Known to many as “Maddog”, his influence extended far beyond the court, through mentorship, leadership, and a deep commitment to growing the sport and the community around it.

Four-time Paralympian Mike Whitehead, who travelled to Fredericton for the tournament, shares what the event meant to him:
“Being part of this first memorial tournament is very special. It [wheelchair rugby] has changed many lives, including mine. Watching some of Hal’s mentees play the best sport in the world and smile from ear-to-ear is a true testament to his service to the community.”
The tournament brought visitors to our region from across the country, giving the city a chance to host athletes, supporters, and wheelchair rugby fans alike. For many involved, it was also a sign of how the sport continues to grow in New Brunswick.
“Wheelchair rugby in New Brunswick isn’t just growing—it’s thriving,” says Jaimie Randall, Parasport Coordinator with Parasport NB. “The court brought together a wide range of athletes, from experienced players to those stepping onto the court for the first time.”
Welcoming teams for an event like this takes coordination long before the first game begins. At YFC, our diligent team helped support arrivals by assisting with equipment, coordinating ground transportation, and helping athletes and supporters move through the terminal with ease. It’s one example of the work that goes into enhancing accessible travel for all at our airport. Learn more about how we support accessible travel at YFC.
