75 years of connection

Fredericton International Airport terminal through the years
A new year often inspires us to pause and reflect. At the Fredericton International Airport (YFC), we’ve got even more to be grateful for than usual: this year marks 75 years since the airport first opened and 25 years since the Fredericton International Airport Authority (FIAA) began operating YFC.
When the airport became operational in 1951, it was built to serve a growing region. Since then, YFC has grown alongside Fredericton and the Capital Region by adapting to how the people here travel, work, and do business.
That evolution is reflected throughout the airport today. A fun fact: in 1950-1951, the aircraft servicing Fredericton was the Lockheed 10, which could carry only 10 passengers! Today, our runways are long enough to handle much larger aircraft, including some of the world’s largest planes. Inside the terminal, the recent renovation in 2021 introduced a new YFC with natural light, modern amenities like fast, free Wi-Fi, charging outlets at every seat, EV charging, new parking system, and improved accessibility features. Each upgrade has focused on comfort, efficiency, and accessibility for today’s travellers. YFC has since been many things to many people: a gateway to the world and a warm welcome home.
25 years of community-focused leadership
Since 2001, the FIAA has operated YFC as a not-for-profit corporation on behalf of Transport Canada. While the airport remains federally owned, the FIAA is responsible for its day-to-day operations and long-term planning. The past 25 years with the FIAA have been shaped by steady progress and strong community partnerships. Growth hasn’t happened overnight, but through investing in infrastructure, strengthening air service, and a continued focus on the traveller experience.

Just as importantly, YFC has also been supporting the region’s economic growth and social vitality by helping local businesses reach new markets, attracting visitors and businesses via tourism, trade, and employment opportunities. All of that was made possible by major investments and changes—the new terminal and extended runway, increased air service, and new airline partnerships. Strengthened and reliable air service also allows local businesses to operate nationally and internationally, while also helping attract national conventions to the Capital Region.
“When the airport was being transferred to the Authority, the vital importance of the airport to the future of our community became well understood,” says David Innes, former President and CEO of the Fredericton International Airport Authority. “The vision of the Fredericton International Airport as a fully capable facility providing a variety of air services meeting the needs of the community was born. Over the past 25 years, that vision has largely been achieved through the collective efforts of many people at the airport and in our community.”
As we head into this milestone year, we’re taking time to reflect on the people, partnerships, and stories that have defined YFC. As always, thank you to our travellers, partners, and community for being part of the journey. Stay tuned as we share more about where we started, how we’ve grown, and many individuals who have helped shape YFC along the way.
